Diversity Strategy

Sameness at the table, whether it’s the breakfast table or the table of ideas, doesn’t create interest or capture the prolonged attention of consumers.

Kellogg believes that a reputation is a very fragile thing, and we work hard to preserve ours through responsible leadership and action. That means valuing the diversity of our employee, customer and consumer base, and putting a framework in place to support our people and business strategies.

We know that having a diverse work force is the right thing to do and makes good business sense. We also know that simply having diversity in our work force is not enough; we must create an inclusive environment where all people can contribute their best work.

We have a defined set of values, which we call our K Values, to guide how we interact with our customers, our consumers and with each other. These values charge us to act with integrity and show respect, promote passion about our business, and demonstrate accountability for our personal and professional actions.

Our K Values also promote an environment that values diverse backgrounds, experiences and ways of thinking. Our diversity and inclusion strategy supports that focus with recruiting efforts dedicated to reaching all potential candidates. And once talented individuals join Kellogg, our people programs help these individuals build great careers.

The Executive Management Committee (EMC) has developed a global strategy to help Kellogg continually improve in creating a diverse and inclusive workplace. The Diversity and Inclusion strategy is designed to create and sustain a diverse and inclusive work environment that will enable us to maintain our position as one of the world’s leading food companies. Based on our K Values, this strategy enables us to create a work force that reflects our consumer and customer base and an environment where everyone feels the freedom to contribute.

The Kellogg Company Diversity and Inclusion Strategy charges us to:

• Build accountability for diversity and inclusion throughout the organization
• Recruit, retain and develop talented people
• Drive understanding, education and awareness
• Create the environment

Build accountability for diversity and inclusion throughout the organization
Everyone knows that old axiom, “What gets measured gets done.” Any stated goal needs to be measured and have assigned accountability. To that end, the EMC has ensured that all employees are working toward a more diverse and inclusive Kellogg by asking them to be accountable to that goal.

All managers of people, throughout the organization, have performance measures in place to ensure the execution of the diversity and inclusion strategy throughout the company.

Recruit, retain and develop talented people
Top talent is the hallmark of a great company – recruiting them, retaining them and developing them to be the best that they can be. This means everyone is included and able to bring their best work to the table.

Kellogg has partnerships with the Society of Women Engineers, Network of Executive Women, Black MBA, Hispanic MBA and the National Sales Network, to enhance our recruiting efforts.

Drive understanding, education and awareness
“We have the humility and hunger to learn,” one of our K Values, compels us to learn more about the experiences of others and expand our own understanding of the issues around creating a diverse and inclusive workplace. Through Managing Inclusion© training sessions, custom-designed workshops like “Understanding the Barriers to Inclusion” and “How to be a GRE-E-EAT Ally”, guest speakers, and community-sponsored diversity programs, Kellogg employees have many opportunities to expand their knowledge.

Create the environment
Through the implementation of the EMC’s diversity and inclusion strategy, all Kellogg employees contribute to making Kellogg a great place to work for all.

We support and encourage various employee affinity groups within the organization. The Kellogg African American Resource Group (KAARG), Women of Kellogg (WOK), Young Professionals, Kellogg Multinational Employee Resource Group (K-MERG), and ¡HOLA! Kellogg’s Latino Employee Resource Group, are all examples of resources available to our employees. These groups are open to all employees and promote the individual’s development through information sharing, informal mentoring opportunities and the chance to develop a network of contacts.

As a company, we seek opportunities to be involved with the global community through our development and marketing of nutritious food products to serve the world and through our actions as people. One way in which we engage the community is by forging relationships with alternate vendors through our Supplier Diversity Program and reaching out to a diverse consumer base via our Ethnic Marketing Group.

We have been committed to supplier diversity for more than 20 years because we know that partnering with diverse suppliers opens up a pipeline of ideas, solutions and better ways of doing things. Today our program includes more than 300 suppliers representing businesses owned by minorities, women and disabled veterans in the United States. By cultivating strategic procurement relationships with diverse companies, we are investing in their future and ours.

Our Ethnic Marketing group is dedicated to ensuring we connect with our consumers in appropriate ways. Using innovative promotional programs and targeted communications, we’re finding that reaching out to ethnic populations encourages people to connect with our company. We also create partnerships with minority groups and special programs across the country through donations, corporate sponsorships and specific promotions.

Our reach into the communities we serve doesn’t end there. Kellogg is also a responsible corporate citizen, helping to create thriving communities through partnerships, involvement and contributions. We believe that business can play an important role in helping to address many of the challenges and social problems facing people and communities today. This belief has its roots in the personal mission of W.K. Kellogg, our founder, who sought to “help people help themselves.”

Social responsibility is a way of life at Kellogg. We partner with organizations that are working to improve opportunities for people. Through sponsorships and contributions, we support programs that have proven results of improving lives. And by connecting to our communities as volunteers, Kellogg employees give of their time and talents in a variety of efforts.

The “community” of the 21st century is a global one, embracing people of all backgrounds and cultures. At Kellogg, it’s just the way we do business.
