Helping Children and Youth

We know that many children around the world live in extremely difficult conditions or circumstances. Kellogg Company is steadfast in its commitment to helping children and youth reach their potential.

Some examples of our commitment to child and youth development include:

World of Children

World of Children LogoKellogg Company recognizes the importance of global efforts to improve the lives of children and became a founding sponsor of the World of Children organization in 1998. World of Children, Inc. is a nonprofit global organization whose mission is to honor, illuminate and inspire action on behalf of children. World of Children each year presents numerous awards to individuals who have made a world of difference in the lives of children around the world. Kellogg’s Child Development Award honors a person who makes extraordinary lifetime contributions to children by improving their opportunities to learn and grow.

In 2005, Hui-jung Chi of Taiwan, China, received Kellogg’s Child Development Award of $100,000 for her work with shunned and abused children. Chi, a former journalist, has worked tirelessly for the past 13 years as a child advocate and devotee to social reform in Taiwan. Chi’s work has directly benefited the lives of 100,000 children in Taiwan.

Since 1998, the World of Children Awards Program has recognized 52 honorees from 20 countries, awarding more than $1.25 million that has been reinvested in helping more than 30 million children worldwide.

Action for Healthy Kids

Action for Healthy KidsIn the past 20 years, the incidence of overweight children has doubled and for adolescents, has tripled. Kellogg Company in 2005 provided a $275,000 grant to Action for Healthy Kids to help schools improve students’ health. Action for Healthy Kids, which works to decrease the incidence of obesity by improving nutrition and increasing physical activity in schools, was created in response to the Surgeon General’s Call to Action to Prevent and Decrease Overweight and Obesity. The school environment was identified as one of five key sites of change.

A public-private partnership of more than 50 national organizations and government agencies representing education, health, fitness and nutrition, Action for Healthy Kids addresses the epidemic of overweight, sedentary, and undernourished youth by focusing on changes in schools. Since it was formed in 2002, Action for Healthy Kids has expanded its reach to millions of students nationwide through initiatives in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

The Kellogg grant allows Action for Healthy Kids to provide funds up to $25,000 to selected state teams to help schools implement and evaluate the impact of local wellness policies. We are proud to partner with Action for Healthy Kids, an organization that shares our belief in the importance of a wholesome diet and physical activity for children. Our grant offers schools additional opportunities to help children achieve optimal health.

HOSTS Learning – Help One Student to Succeed

HOSTS ImageFor more than a decade, Kellogg Company has invested in HOSTS Learning.  HOSTS -- Help One Student to Succeed -- provides research-based learning systems that accelerate student achievement in reading and math.  The program helps teachers create individualized academic plans that can be delivered in the classroom, to small groups in or out of the classroom, or in one-to-one mentoring sessions before, during, or after school.  HOSTS’ research has shown that students who participate in their program gain an average of two grade levels in a single school year.

Hundreds of Kellogg employees and retirees have volunteered as HOSTS mentors for at-risk elementary children. They spend time in classrooms working one-on-one with students to help them succeed in school.

In addition to supporting HOSTS with employee volunteers, we also have offered special grants for schools to purchase the HOSTSLink program for English Language Development, which is used for students learning English as a second language.

In 2005, Kellogg provided $100,000 for the HOSTSLink program to teach English as a second language at 20 HOSTS mentoring programs in schools across Texas. Many of the schools receiving the grants have predominantly Hispanic student populations, with many students speaking English as their second language. These programs will assist more than 1,200 students who are learning English and can benefit from one-to-one mentoring by volunteers in their local communities.
