Opportunities for Minorities and Women

As a company, we embrace diversity and make it a priority. That commitment extends beyond the company to the community as well. Through scholarships, sponsorships, projects and financial contributions, we invest in the futures of minorities and women.

To improve opportunities for minorities and women, we work with:

Scholarships

Kellogg Company believes in supporting educational opportunities for talented young people and provides and participates in a variety of scholarship programs. In 2005, we funded scholarships totaling $200,000.

Many of the scholarship programs we support include diversity as a criteria. In 2005, $170,000 of scholarship funds went to students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Kellogg in 2005 also donated $15,000 each to the Grambling University National Alumni Association and the Southern University Alumni Federation for scholarships designated to help students affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Through a partnership with the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, we also have taken a leadership role in combating low Hispanic representation in colleges and universities. In 2004, for example, Kellogg awarded $35,000 in scholarships to Hispanic college-bound high school students.

For more than eight years, Kellogg pledged $200,000 annually to support development programs at Historically Black Colleges and Universities through a partnership with syndicated radio host Tom Joyner.  Joyner hosts a series of fundraising galas at Historically Black Colleges and University across the country.

Kellogg has provided funding for a wide variety of scholarship programs that include diversity as selection criteria. In recent years, these scholarships have included, among others:

  • MESAB – scholarships for Medical Education for South African BlacksNational Association of Black Accountants
  • Carson’s Scholars Fund – scholarships offered to Battle Creek, Mich., public school students
  • Consortium for Graduate Study in Management – scholarships to support the Millennium Campaign for Educational Excellence
  • Kellogg Company Career Scholarships – Five fully funded scholarships that include an internship with the company
  • Carlos M. Gutierrez Scholarship Fund – scholarships for college or technical training
  • Hispanic College Fund
  • Hispanic Scholarship Fund

NAACP Law Fellows

NAACP ImageKellogg Company’s commitment to excellence in legal education is exemplified in our fellowships for law school students. Initiated in 2003, Kellogg’s Law Fellows Program provides law school students the unique opportunity to study civil rights strategies by working in the NAACP’s national legal department in Baltimore, MD. Fellows also work in the NAACP’s Washington, D.C. bureau.

The program is supported by a $75,000 grant from the Kellogg Corporate Citizenship Fund, the company’s charitable arm. Kellogg has a long-standing partnership with the NAACP and similar groups working to achieve equal opportunities for individuals of diverse backgrounds.

Each year, Law Fellows work with civil rights attorneys on issues involving criminal justice, education, housing, voting rights and environmental justice. They also obtain hands-on experience handling citizen complaints of civil rights violations as well as prepare research papers in their areas of interest.

Girls on the Run®*

Girls on the RunKellogg Company in 2005 kicked off a partnership with the Girls on the Run®*, a nonprofit organization that encourages girls ages 8-13 to be more active, eat right and live a balanced and healthy lifestyle. Kellogg is sponsoring Girls on the Run over three years as part of its Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes® Earn Your Stripes™ initiative.

Girls on the Run educates and prepares girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. The program addresses all aspects of girls' development – their physical, emotional, mental, social and spiritual well-being. The centerpiece of the partnership is Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes’ sponsorship of Girls on the Run’s after-school programs. The programs combine training for a 3.1 mile running event with self-esteem enhancing, uplifting workouts. The character development program is complemented by a curriculum that provides girls with the necessary tools to weather the challenges of adolescence.

There are more than 100 Girls on the Run councils across the United States and Canada. Girls on the Run International establishes, trains and supports a network of community-level councils with local volunteers. Volunteers serve as role models to the girls as coaches for the 12-week program.

Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes launched its Earn Your Stripes program in 2004. The initiative is designed to encourage kids to be more active, eat right and work hard to achieve their goals.

American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women

Go Red for WomenKellogg Company became a proud national supporter of the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women movement in 2006. Kellogg’s® Smart Start® Healthy Heart cereals, which are certified by the American Heart Association, are sponsoring the multi-year partnership.

Heart disease knows no boundaries.  It is the leading cause of death in the United States - among both men and women. According to the 2006 American Heart Association’s Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics, one woman dies every minute of heart disease, nearly half a million women each year. To demonstrate its commitment and help call attention to this critical health issue, Smart Start Healthy Heart has launched a major heart health initiative.  In addition to providing national support for the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women movement, this initiative includes free health screenings, community events, and on-pack promotions. 

Most people who suffer from heart disease are affected by its two leading risk factors: high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Smart Start Healthy Heart is the only national cold cereal with ingredients that may help lower both blood pressure and cholesterol.

From awareness-building TV and Print advertising, to distribution of literature to healthcare professional offices, Smart Start Healthy Heart will provide information about heart disease including how the symptoms can be different for women than men. Smart Start Healthy Heart promotional activities will also contribute a minimum donation of $425,000 to the Go Red For Women movement in 2006.

Komen Race for the Cure®*

The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Face for the CureKellogg Company is entering its 10th year of involvement with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Race for the Cure® Series.  Since the partnership began, the company has contributed more than $11 million to the effort and again this year, Kellogg will be a National Series Sponsor. About 1.5 million people participate in this annual event, which includes 5K runs and fitness walks in more than 100 cities around the country.

Up to 75% of the net proceeds from every event remains in the local community to help fund breast health education, as well as breast cancer screening and treatment programs. A minimum of 25% of the net proceeds helps fund breast cancer research and grant projects awarded through the foundation’s headquarters.

 In 2005, our “Promise” to help lead the Race against breast cancer included informing consumers about the Komen Race for the Cure® on millions of packages of select Kellogg products.  We also kicked off a special promotional offer of “A Promise in Action” wristband through specially marked boxes of cereal.

Kellogg is a member of the Komen Million Dollar Council, a special group of corporate partners that have made financial contributions of at least $1 million and have found new, innovative ways to communicate key messages about breast cancer.

HOSTS Learning – Help One Student to Succeed

HOSTS ImageFor more than a decade, Kellogg Company has invested in HOSTS Learning.  HOSTS -- Help One Student to Succeed -- provides research-based learning systems that accelerate student achievement in reading and math.  The program helps teachers create individualized academic plans that can be delivered in the classroom, to small groups in or out of the classroom, or in one-to-one mentoring sessions before, during, or after school.  HOSTS’ research has shown that students who participate in their program gain an average of two grade levels in a single school year.

Hundreds of Kellogg employees and retirees have volunteered as HOSTS mentors for at-risk elementary children. They spend time in classrooms working one-on-one with students to help them succeed in school.

In addition to supporting HOSTS with employee volunteers, we also have offered special grants for schools to purchase the HOSTSLink program for English Language Development, which is used for students learning English as a second language.

In 2005, Kellogg provided $100,000 for the HOSTSLink program to teach English as a second language at 20 HOSTS mentoring programs in schools across Texas. Many of the schools receiving the grants have predominantly Hispanic student populations, with many students speaking English as their second language. These programs will assist more than 1,200 students who are learning English and can benefit from one-to-one mentoring by volunteers in their local communities.

Each week, employees at Kellogg Battle Creek, Mich., tutor at-risk students at elementary schools. HOSTS Learning – Help One Student to Succeed – provides research-based learning systems that accelerate student achievement in reading and math for grades K-12. Kellogg Company also has provided HOSTS Learning schools with monetary donations to help support its mentoring programs.
