Strengthen Communities

At Kellogg Company, we know we can play an important role in addressing the economic and social development of the locations where we have operations. We strive to make a lasting impact on our communities and encourage our employees to become actively involved in them.

We provide human and financial resources to organizations that strengthen communities, including:

United Way

UW Kellogg Company’s efforts to support the United Way is consistent with our long history of helping people in the communities in which our people live and work. We provide a dollar-for-dollar match for every pledge employees and retirees make to the United Way.

United Way is a national network of community partners across the United States that addresses the most critical issues facing our communities. Its focus areas include preparing children and youth to succeed, promoting self-sufficiency, building strong neighborhoods, and making sure there are basic services available for people who need them.

In 2005, 23 Kellogg locations in the United States participated in United Way’s annual campaign – the most ever – and raised more than $3.7 million. Of the total contribution, $2.25 million went to the United Way of Greater Battle Creek (Mich.), where the company is headquartered.

Employees also support United Way beyond their monetary contributions. They raise money by leading fundraising activities such as golf outings, basketball tournaments, bowling events and multiple live and silent auctions. Many employees also take part in United Way’s Days of Caring around the country.

A record number of Kellogg employees participated in community improvement projects through Days of Caring in 2005. In the Battle Creek, Mich., area, for example, more than 800 employees volunteered for several local non-profits, including Habitat for Humanity, Food Bank of South Central Michigan, Charitable Union, Salvation Army and SAFE Place. Another 100 employees actively planned campaign activities to raise awareness and funds.

Product Donation and Disaster Relief

Product Donation

Americas Second HarvestKellogg Company has a longstanding commitment to feed the hungry.  Our hunger relief efforts span the globe.  Each year, we donate about $20 million of food products for hunger and disaster relief to help people most in need.

In the United States, our food donations primarily are made through America’s Second Harvest, the nation’s largest charitable hunger-relief organization.  With a network of 200 regional member food banks and food-rescue organizations, America’s Second Harvest distributes nearly two billion pounds of food and grocery products each year.

In 2005, America’s Second Harvest presented Kellogg with its Donor of the Year Award.  We were recognized for our frequent donations of truckloads of product to America’s Second Harvest member food banks throughout the county, as well as our history of providing direct financial support to the organization.

Kellogg employees also donate their time to make a difference in hunger relief efforts, such as supporting National Hunger Awareness Day, volunteering at local food banks, and speaking at food conferences.
